The computer is a delicate piece of machinery, but can be put to work to handle things that could take you hours to complete. It is no wonder people sometimes leave it up to the experts to fix, but if you feel competent enough to tackle it yourself you can build the core of the computer yourself or repair it or build one. The motherboard is much like the nervous system in people, it is connected to everything and transmits signals from the brain to the rest of the computer. When repairing your system, you will want to try to identify it to be sure you are replacing it with the correct one. Look for the FCC number or an Equipment Code. A model number can help you look it up as well if you cannot find the FCC, you will be able to see it near the white PCI slots. The BIOS should be a reliable way to find it as well. Computers can have different keys for accessing the BIOS, yours should be one of these: F1, F2, F10, F11 or possibly the Delete Key. Restart your system and press one of those keys, you should be able to access the BIOS.
You may wish to have a few things on hand a digital camera to take a picture of the current set up before anything is removed and or a roll of masking tape to mark the cords so you will know where to connect them. You will definitely need a screwdriver. Make sure all surfaces you will be working on are static free, and that you are not working in a carpeted area. Also fastening any loose hair so that you cannot cause static build up.
If you do touch the motherboard or CPU when you have built up static, you can demolish them. Take out anything that might be in where the CPU goes, put the CPU in and clip it in. Place a minute amount of the thermal paste on the CPU. Screw or clip in the Fan or heat sink.
Your motherboard should have came with small pegs labeled for certain positions. Put the pegs in and gently set the motherboard on them, you should have screws for it, screw them in just enough to tighten them. If you do too much, the board can crack and then you will have to replace it.
Now we will begin with the power supply. It will be important to connect the cords of the power supply correctly. If there is a problem with the install of it, you may ruin the CPU and motherboard. There may be something mentioned of this if you have a manual for it or you can refer to the picture you took with the camera or the tape. There also may be pictures online if you have a second computer that you can refer to.
Be sure to connect the main hard drive to the Master slot and ensure that its SATA cords are placed in the right places. Connect any other hard drives you may have and the cords. Next any disc drives and their cords. You will want to make sure all of these are getting power from the power supply, so it is important not to forget any of them.
Install the PCI cards in their appropriate spots, this would things like video cards, sound cards and the like. Be sure to make sure they are getting power as well if they have the required slots for them. Install the RAM, make sure to check with the manual to verify that if they need specific instructions.
