Sure, why not it’s a knife. Unless it’s serrated there shouldn’t be any problem.

I’m surprised a new knife isn’t sharp, but unless it’s serrated, a knife sharpener should work the same way on any knife.

You may want to be a bit careful of which kitchen knife sharpener you use. Some of the gadgety ones aren’t worth much. You should know from having used it on other knives in your kitchen whether your sharpener any good, or not.

it will probably work, but nothing replaces a good flat piece of arkansas stone, or quality sharpening system, there are a lot of different edge types and angles to put on a blade, each has its own best uses, a razor sharp edge usually doesn’t last very long, i personally like a chisel edge, but one thing you can be sure of is a dull knife can be a dangerous tool. too much to list try doing a Google search, for pics and detailed instructions.

The answer is yes and no.
Yes, because any sharpener will sharpen a knife, to some degree.
No, because single sharpener is never good enough to sharpen a knife to its full sharpness.
If you have a sharpener with just one or even two different grits it’s either too fine to grind a bevel, i.e. takes forever to do that, or if you have just a coarse grit then the edge is too rough and won’t last long, let alone being rather dull.

If you don’t have experience with sharpening stones, then at the beginning they’re not that easy to use, because it takes some training to hold a consistent sharpening angle.

The simplest thing for you to do, would be sandpaper+mousepad.
It’s a lot more forgiving method than sharpening stones, plus it’s very cheap. You can find precise details here – http://zknives.com/knives/articles/sandpapermousepad.shtml.
But, in short it’s as simple as putting sandpaper over a mousepad or some soft surface like that and sharpening on it.
You’ll find a few tips on how to keep consistent angles too. Works for stones and sandpaper equally well.
