So I’m wanting to buy a new TV that has HDTV receiver already in it. So if I have this tv, will I automatically be able to pick up shown in HDTV? I have dish network…or do I have to pay for a special service through Dish?
It will not work. Dish receivers are set to pick up a certain frequency. That’s why you can’t use Directv receivers to pick up Dish programming and vice versa. I’m a trainer with Dish. Upgrading to an HD receiver is pretty cheap when compared to buying it outright and sometimes the installation is free if needed!!
You will certainly be able to pick up OTA (off the air) tv broadcasts (your local channels) with a built-in tuner. The number of HD channels will depend on your area. I have CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, UPN, CB, PBS channels from both Baltimore and Washington.
The satellite HD channels, you do need a HD satellite receiver to decode. However, as the other poster pointed out, these can often be obtained at no cost to you.
Yes, you have to call the Dish Network and tell them you have recently purchased an HDTV. They will probably need to come in and upgrade your existing dish and/or receiver. However, you can always pick up HDTV off-the-air using a regular TV antenna. Most local TV stations now broadcast in digital, many in HD — and it’s free.
